Engineered Hardwood Cross Section

WHAT IS ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORING?

Engineered wood flooring looks almost identical to the hardwood on the surface, but instead of a single wood plank, it’s made of a high-quality plywood core with a thin layer of hardwood flooring on top. Engineered wood flooring is a more affordable option, but can only be refinished of the veneer layer is thick enough. Additionally, you may find designs that are only possible with engineered wood, such as softer exotic species, specialty textures, certain surface treatments, color effects and extra-wide planks.

ENGINEERED HARDWOOD VS SOLID HARDWOOD

To the untrained eye, solid and engineered hardwood flooring look nearly the same. That’s because the real difference lies beneath the surface! Solid hardwood flooring is cut from a single, solid piece of wood. Engineered hardwood, on the other hand, is made up of three layers: solid hardwood on top and bottom and a compressed layer of plywood in the middle. Both give you the look and feel of hardwood floors, but there are some key differences.
